Conservatives for Obama (More)

First Kmiec, now Bacevich.  For example:

Social conservatives counting on McCain to return the nation to the path of righteousness are kidding themselves. Within this camp, abortion has long been the flagship issue. Yet only a naïf would believe that today’s Republican Party has any real interest in overturning Roe v. Wade or that doing so now would contribute in any meaningful way to the restoration of “family values.” GOP support for such values is akin to the Democratic Party’s professed devotion to the “working poor”: each is a ploy to get votes, trotted out seasonally, quickly forgotten once the polls close.

Republicans for Obama

It's official: Kmiec endorses Obama.

Rage

In many ways, I find this year's Indiana Hoosiers basketball team to be more frustrating than any of the teams during the Mike Davis era. Right now I have rage and frustration directed at this team that I don't think I've ever felt towards an IU team before.  Oh, I'm still a die-hard, mind you, but tonight's loss to Arkansas and their late season implosion boggles my mind.

How does a team that began its year 17-1 and ranked  in the top 10 fall apart so dramatically?  They lost their coach, you may say.  But I don't buy (just) that.  It's clear that this team lost its will when it (rightfully) lost its coach.  Whether it was the loss tonight to Arkansas, the loss to Minnesota in the Big 10 Tournament, the loss to Penn State, or the pasting they received in East Lansing, this Hoosiers team clearly gave up a month ago and I probably should have quit watching them then.

Grow up, Hoosiers.  By giving up when your coach got caught cheating you exposed your true loyalties - loyalties that in retrospect were merely with one individual instead of with a university, its fan base, or the tradition/religion that is basketball at the Hoosier state's flagship institution.  When Sampson left the school, many of you skipped practice in protest.  Cry me a river.  Maybe I've become a crotchety old fart, but I remember days when players were recruited to universities and not just to individual coaches.  So please, next IU coach - recruit players who want to put on an Indiana jersey and play for IU - not who are so absorbed with whomever you are that they'll throw temper tantrums if you violate NCAA rules and get caught.

Oh, and Eric Gordon:  just leave already.

Sigh.

Speaking of temper tantrums.

Smack

For all you Arkansas fans: there will be no smack written on this blog regarding Friday night's Arkansas/IU game.  I've picked Arkansas to win in every bracket I've filled out.  It seems IU stopped playing a few weeks ago.

Until Friday night, go Hoosiers.  After Friday, go Bruins.  (I have to root for who provides me my health care.)

Watch for Us

Just got the email for two free tickets to this coming Tuesday night's live taping of American Idol.  Life in L.A. can be very weird.  I'm most frightened by this disclaimer on the tickets:

DRESS CODE IS STRICTLY ENFORCED FOR OUR INTERNET TICKET HOLDERS! ABSOLUTELY no apparel with logos of any kind on the front or back are allowed in the studio audience. ABSOLUTELY no t-shirts, white tops, shorts, or flip flops! Dark clothing preferred. Please dress hip and upscale or as if going to a nice dinner. You will be on camera so it is very important that you dress nicely! When you look great, the show looks great!

The Way Things Stand

I think this imaginary conversation is the most balanced, even-handed take on how things stand in the Democratic primary.

The Last Word

Ok, so here's the real scoop:

NCAA championships: Jerry Crowe's column in Friday's Sports section reported that only five Division I schools had won five or more NCAA men's championships over the last 20 years. The item should have said that USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, Wisconsin and Stanford were the only schools in that time to win NCAA titles in five or more men's sports.

There.  Now, take that, SEC.
